Keto is an abbreviation for the word Ketogenic, which refers to a metabolic state known as ketosis. This means when your body runs on a form of energy called ketones rather than glucose. So, a Keto diet is a nontraditional diet consisting of a very high fat, moderate protein, very low carb diet. This diet supports the transition and maintenance of this metabolic state and is ideal for weight loss patients, and especially for patients who have had a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery in Mexico.

Ketogenic Diet can be an option for patients who are at least 30 days out of Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass Surgery. This is because a Keto diet is ideal for weight loss and for some patients being susceptible to dumping syndrome with high sugars and fats.  A Keto diet for weight loss patients’ needs to focus on LOW FAT, high protein diet.  So it is not your typical normal Keto diet.

It is common when the body is getting adequate carbohydrates to form the diet, it runs on glucose as energy. If the body is getting enough carbohydrates to function, then it will not need to rely on its stored energy (fat) for fuel. However, the intention of this Keto diet is that the body would have so low carbs that it will be forced to switch to a different metabolic state and use its stored energy (fat). Because of this, weight loss is a side effect of this metabolic state.

The Keto Diet benefits are:

It is important to say that Keto diet is not for everybody.  It is an option for some patients. It is a restrictive diet and patients who decide to go with it, must adequate the amount of protein in their diet as the fatty foods are more caloric than protein and carbs.

Keto Diet includes the following food:

Keto diet avoids the following food:

Keto Diet consists in consuming 70% fat, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates. ‘Ketosis’ means the body is fueled almost completely by fat when you eat low carb diet and there isn’t much glucose (blood sugar) available. So, this fuel system increases your fat burn immensely.  Remember however if you have weight loss surgery you need to not consume 70% fat.  You need to follow the protein as your main source of consumption, and vegetables, then low fat and very low carb.

Obviously, with a Keto diet, you will throw your body into a much different fuel system, so we recommend that you consult with a specialist if you are a good candidate for this diet. Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass surgery is not a magic pill for weight loss and patients still need to put in the work post-surgery. Keto Diet might be an option for you, but make sure you follow the adjusted LOW FAT KETO DIET, as again weight loss surgery patients do not need to take in that much fat as we are trying to eliminate the fat from our bodies and diet.
