If your initial Weight Loss Surgery was a Lap Band surgery and it has failed short of your expectations, it must be heartbreaking, however, be positive, there is hope!

Dr. Hidalgo and his well-trained doctors and staff at Weight Loss Team can perform Revision Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico personalized to patient’s needs to help them achieve their goals.

Weight Loss Revision Surgery is performed for two reasons:

  1. There are complications with the initial surgery
  2. Weight loss results have not been achieved

The Lap Band, also well-known as the adjustable gastric band is a procedure that consists in placing an inflatable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch above the band and the rest of stomach remains intact below it, slowing down and limiting the food intake, which is known as restriction.  The lapband is a restrictive surgery that in theory is similar to the gastric sleeve surgery but does not work nearly as well.  Lap Band Surgery is generally a Weight Loss procedure that has been successful for very few patients. However, some other patients have suffered lots of complications, may not have had weight loss success or the lapband surgery just was not what they expected. Because of all of this, many patients might decide to switch over to a Gastric Sleeve surgery or even revise their lapband to an RNY Bypass instead.

Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve Surgery is recommended for patients who have experienced complications after the initial surgery (lap band), have achieved insufficient weight loss or regained 40% of the weight they have lost with their lapband surgery. Studies say that gastric lap bands are removed laparoscopically most commonly after 7-10 years from placement.

There are some reasons to explain the failure of the initial Weight Loss Surgery, but the most common reason is the patient’s reluctance to make a lifestyle change and choose a healthy lifestyle.  The main problem with the lapband is that since the entire stomach remains below the lapband once the patient starts eating and the food passes to the main stomach, the patient can continue to eat and has no real restriction, so this surgery truly relies on the patients conduct of not “tricking the band” and overeating.  The main issue is most obese patients like to eat, and as such the lapband as a tool usually does not work because the cravings overpower the desire to lose weight.

It is important to say that Weight Loss Revision Surgery is also a tool to help people lose weight, but in this case, a tool used for a second time. As such, a more committed diet and exercise routine are recommended. Patients need to understand that a second Weight Loss Procedure will only work if they are awarded of the specific long-term lifestyle changes.  The big plus to the gastric sleeve, however, is that with the VSG, the stomach is removed and reduced in capacity, so at first once the lapband is removed, the doctor then removes 80% of the stomach, so once the gastric sleeve is done, the patient can only eat the amount of that which the stomach holds, somewhere between 3-4 ounces of food.  And as such the patient will then lose the weight they need to lose.

If patients have an intolerance or complications to the Lap Band such as nausea, vomiting, dysphagia or any other discomfort, the removal of their band will offer immediate symptom relief. If patients do not have a conversion to another weight loss surgery, some of them might regain weight after the Lap Band removal. On the other hand, patients who are decided to have Lap Band Conversion to Sleeve will have significant weight loss results, with a low rate of long-term complications and a better quality of life.
