It is a fact that one of the most common fears that Gastric Sleeve patients have is the fear that they will not reach their goal weight after surgery. However, there are also gastric sleeve patients, who have had a great weight loss journey with their surgery and they have reached their goal, yet they still find themselves still losing weight. Usually, this is because the patient may feel they are at the weight they want to be at, but in reality, the body needs to lose more weight to get down to the correct weight the body should be at. Many patients ask how to stop losing weight once they reach their goal weight and here we will show you a few tips and tricks to help stop your weight loss once you are at your desired weight after having your gastric sleeve surgery.
Losing too much weight is not healthy at all. That said, the weight-loss curve is very intense in the first 12 or 18 months after Gastric Sleeve surgery. The reason for this is because of the shape and size of the new stomach, the restriction of food and the process itself in how the patients adjust to the new stomach and the body’s metabolism reaction to the surgery itself. Much of the results also rely on what the patient eats post gastric sleeve surgery as well as their exercise routine.
It is a fact that the 95% of Gastric Sleeve patients regain around 10% of the maximum weight they lost after surgery, so if the patient loses a large amount of weight causing them to lose more than the body actually needs to lose, then this 10% regain will help them stabilize their weight at a normal body weight. Also, normally the body will stop losing weight when it gets to the body mass that it considers to be normal. For some patients they have never been this size, so for some friends and family they may even say the patient looks too thin, but in reality, they are at a healthy BMI. Incorporating lifestyle changes are needed to increase the chance of successful long-term ideal weight loss.
Strategies or Recommendations
Dr. Juan Francisco Hidalgo who operates out of his bariatric surgical center, Weight Loss Team in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, recommends the following strategies to help patients stop losing weight and maintain an ideal weight after their surgery. Of course, these strategies will vary and depend on each individual patient, so everyone has to take proper guidance before adding anything new to their diet or workout routine.
- If the patient does a lot of cardio, they might reduce it and start lifting weight to gain muscle and reach their goal weight.
- Too much exercise can make the patient continue losing weight. They must adjust your workout and achieve a balance of cardio and muscle building
- Eat protein bars, nuts, dry fruit, trail mix, grains
- Drink more liquids with the added calories you need (a protein shake a day that may be higher in carbs, remember during the weight loss phase you are focusing on low carb low sugar, here focus on higher carb with some sugar)
- Increase your diet from 800 calories to 1200 calorie-diet to help maintain your ideal weight
- All your calories should be from solid food
- Keep changing your diet and workout as per your requirements
- Eat up to 5 to 6 meals a day
- Stay full all day and stay hydrated.
It is important to understand that the extra protein and liquids should be consumed while the patient’s stomach has not stretched; that means within 18 to 25 months after surgery. Once the patient’s stomach has stretched to its final new size (about 2 years after surgery), the patient should stop increasing calories to prevent weight gain. Patients must consider developing a healthier relationship with food and curb emotional triggers to overeating to reach or achieve a healthy weight.
Losing weight after the Gastric Sleeve Surgery is only half of the battle for many people, the bigger challenge is to maintain the ideal weight and this takes effort and commitment from the patient. Weight goals are achieved by a combination of changes in diet, exercise, eating habits and keeping your emotional life in balance.
