Benefits of having Revision Weight Loss Surgery By Gerald Witt on June 28, 2020

If you have had a prior weight loss surgery and failed to achieve your goal weight for whatever reason, you have been probably asking yourself if it would be worth it to have a Revision Weight Loss Surgery.   Many patients have had weight loss surgery such as a lap band or even a gastric bypass or sleeve and for one reason or another have had no long-term successful results. People ask themselves if these kinds of surgery really offer benefits to bariatric patients.  The answer is almost always a resounding YES, but the truth of the matter is the patient needs to do their part for success, along with the surgeon and as a team, the patient can achieve their goal, and if this does not happen, then a revision surgery can help the patient get back on track and reach their goal.

Having Weight loss surgery done is not always a one-time experience. Some patients end up needing to undergo another surgery in order to reach their goal for many reasons.

The Weight Loss Surgery Revision is a surgical procedure that can be performed on patients who have already undergone a prior form of Bariatric Surgery and have not successfully achieved significant weight loss results from the initial surgery or on those patients who failed to lose enough weight, regained weight or had medical complications.

There are several weight loss surgery options, some of which may limit later options for revision weight loss surgery.

Gastric Bypass Revision is performed as a revision procedure for patients who have not been successful in meeting their weight loss goals after having previous Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve, or even a failed lap band surgery.

There are four types of Weight Loss Revision Surgeries:

+ Duodenal Switch

+ Gastric Bypass or Mini Gastric Bypass

+ Re-Sleeve

+ Lap Band

If you have a failed Lapband Surgery you can revise your current surgery by removing the band and having either a:

+ Duodenal Switch

+ Gastric Bypass or Mini Gastric Bypass

+ Gastric Sleeve

If you have a failed Gastric Sleeve Surgery you can revise your current surgery with a:

+ Duodenal Switch

+ Gastric Bypass or Mini Gastric Bypass

+ Re-Sleeve

If you have a failed Bypass Surgery, then you can revise your current surgery with a Bypass Revision surgery.

In any revision surgery, the first step for the doctor is to go in and review what is currently going on with the patient's first surgery.  He or She must then evaluate what it will take to correct the first surgery.  In the case of a lap band, for instance, this is easy, the removal and subsequent surgery will complete the revision surgery, but with a bypass or DS, it is more complicated as the doctor needs to find the issue, then correct it and do this in the hopes of triggering more malabsorption so that the patient can continue to lose weight.

Patients should consider the following benefits of Revision Weight Loss Surgery:

  • It gives patients a chance to get rid of the weight they expected to lose
  • It is an opportunity for those patients for whom their initial surgery was inadequate for them.
  • It gives a chance to resolve obesity-related comorbidities
  • It helps with medical complications associated with the first procedure, such as ulcers, scar tissues and inability to absorb nutrients
  • It helps treat medical diseases related to obesity health conditions (diabetes Type 2, hypertension, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, joint pain and hyperlipidemia)
  • Desire to eat decreases and a reduction in the patient's hunger sensation.

If you had previous weight loss surgery, you might be a candidate for Revision surgery.   You are a candidate if you are having, or experienced complications or negative effects related to that surgery or if you regained weight, or have gone back to old eating habits. It is important to consult your surgeon or a new bariatric surgeon who will recommend the most suitable procedure according to your medical history and personal situation and will take into consideration the reason why bariatric revision surgery is needed, and how to provide you with the best possible long-term outcome from the revision.
