Gastric Sleeve Surgery is one of the several types of weight loss surgery options. It is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure. The gastric sleeve restricts the volume of food a person can eat and decreases the appetite a patient has. This surgery is one of the most reliable procedures for weight loss helping obese people face their overweight crisis being a powerful tool to lose weight and keep off extra weight.  But how can a patient lose weight with gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric Sleeve is also known as Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy or VSG. It helps patients lose weight by removing between 60 to 80% of their stomach, leaving behind a small sleeve or tube-shaped stomach thus making some changes to patients’ digestive system and metabolism. This surgery helps limit how much food a patient can eat and the nutrients they absorb, helping them to achieve weight loss.

The patient will be in the surgical theater or operating room for about an hour.  The average surgery takes just about 45 minutes from start to finish.  After surgery, the patient will be moved to the recovery room for postoperative care where they are monitored by a surgical nursing staff member. Typically the patient will remain in the recovery room for another hour or so or until they wake up from the anesthesia. The minimally invasive nature of the procedure helps patients recover fast.

The Patients’ stomach for those who undergo the Gastric Sleeve procedure will be significantly smaller after surgery, so they will feel full and stop eating quickly. Add to this, the fact that the section of the patient’s stomach that produces ghrelin (the hunger hormone) is also removed, so the patient will not be as hungry post-surgery.  This helps the patient successfully navigate their weight loss phase diet, eating less and not being hungry!

Gastric Sleeve Surgery is not for everybody. Patients should learn about all the requirements to be qualified. It is important and essential that patients, who are willing to have this kind of procedure, undergo a thorough evaluation to determine if they are solid candidates.

There are aspects that patients should consider when thinking about having gastric sleeve surgery:

  1. BMI (Body Mass Index) more than 30
  2. Patients who suffer serious co-morbidity diseases related to obesity
  3. Patients committed to long term life changes
  4. Patients who could not achieve weight loss sustained for a certain period of time with previous weight loss efforts
  5. Patients who are able to handle physically and emotionally the stress of the procedure
  6. Patients who are between 16 to 70 years old
  7. Patients who are aware of the risks of the surgery
  8. Patients who understand that Gastric Sleeve is not a cure, it is a tool. There is a lot to do after surgery.
  9. Patients who are committed to the proper diet, exercise, and habit lifestyle changes

Obesity is a lifelong disease and Gastric Sleeve cannot by itself offer the patient a permanent cure without the patient in fact participating in a new lifestyle.

The Gastric Sleeve Surgery, the key to success requires good aftercare and considerable habit changes that will provide the patient the results they want and need. The gastric sleeve will not only just help the patient lose weight but also improve their health as well.
