Gastric Bypass also well-known as Roux-en-Y, is a procedure where the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch by removing or bypassing most of the patient’s stomach and the first part of their small intestine. As such, the new created stomach pouch is reconnected to the remaining small intestine creating a new dietary track that will help the patient lose between 70-90% of their excess weight.  For years the Gastric Bypass or RnY or Roux-en Y gastric bypass has been known as the gold standard for weight loss surgery, something now that is true to this day when the patient needs to lose a large amount of weight lets say 130 pounds or more.  Even still, patients typically have many questions when considering Weight Loss Surgery, and the Gastric Bypass.  Weight Loss Team, the Bariatric Surgery Center at the CMQ Hospitals in Puerto Vallarta Mexico will address some of these questions.

  1. Am I a candidate for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?

This procedure is performed to treat severe obesity. For patients with BMI over 45, Gastric Bypass is often recommended and should have very good results.

  1. How much weight can I lose after this kind of surgery?

Gastric Bypass patients lose between 70 and 90 percent of their excess body weight in the first year to year and a half after surgery. Gastric Sleeve patients typically lose between 50 and 70 percent of excess body weight in two years.

  1. Is Gastric Bypass Procedure safe comparing to Gastric Sleeve?

Gastric Bypass is a more complicated procedure than Gastric Sleeve but both are usually done laparoscopically and typically with good results. The complication rate for the Gastric Bypass is about 3% where the complication rate with the Gastric Sleeve is less than 1%.

  1. What happens during the procedure? What does the surgeon do to the stomach?

With the Gastric Bypass surgery, the surgeon reduces patient’s stomach from its regular size to a small pouch, causing weight loss by restricting the amount of food the patient can eat before they feel full and reducing the hunger hormone ‘ghrelin’, if the doctor removes that section of the stomach. At Weight Loss Team our Bariatric Surgeons remove the gastric fundus (the section that creates the ghrelin) along with performing the actual bypass. The doctor also typically removes about 1 and ½ meters of the small intestine.

  1. How fast should I lose weight after surgery?

Patients results always will vary, but typically weight loss is quicker than other surgeries for weight loss. That said it is expected that a patient should lose a minimum of 10 pounds per month or more but ultimately it depends on the patient following the doctor’s orders, and dietary restrictions. Most of the weight loss will happen in the first 12 to 18 months after surgery.

  1. Is there a long-term weight loss success after Gastric Bypass?

Long term weight loss success depends upon a balance of nutritional intake and physical activity. To maintain this weight loss, patients must be committed to permanent lifestyle changes. As such if the patient is committed, they may keep the weight off long term.

  1. Is weight loss more rapid with the Gastric Bypass rather than other surgical techniques?

Weight loss from a Gastric Bypass is a very rapid process for most patients due to the fact that it combines restriction (reduction in the size of the stomach) and malabsorption (bypass a large portion of the small intestine so that the food and calories are not absorbed by the body).

  1. What are the Gastric Bypass Surgery benefits?

  1. Does Gastric Bypass Surgery have a long recovery? Is it risky?

The risk of this surgery is generally low (less than 3% for complications). In fact many doctors consider that it might be riskier to not to have the surgery because of all the diseases that obesity brings with it and as your body size increases, longevity of life also decreases. It is important to mention that as with any serious surgical operation, the decision to have Gastric Bypass surgery must be discussed with your bariatric specialist and family members.

  1. Will I need plastic surgery after Gastric Bypass Surgery?

With the gastric bypass surgery, there is no big scar due to the fact that the surgery is performed through laparoscopy. It is important to mention that not everyone ends up with large amount of excess skin after losing weight following Gastric Bypass Surgery but some do because of the amount of weight they need to lose. That said Plastic Surgery can help correct any sagging skin issues that may present after the surgery.
